Jim O'Rourke - Two Organs

Released in 2004. it consists of two approximately 20 minute tracks.

The first track, called Two Organs, is hypnotic and beautiful. The second track is called Two More Organs - I'm not quite sure how to describe it but it didn't feel as upbeat as the first.
Both songs are a transcendental voyage in their own right.
I would recommend this album maybe only to drone fanatics.

An incredible movie. Kang-ho Song is always a joy to watch but the acting all around was great. Storyline, cinematography, and directorial style are all notably fantastic. Chan-wook Park has for a long while made great effort to imagine and create spectacular visuals and does lots of great stuff here. Easily the best vampire movie I've ever seen.
The character of the priest is wonderful, his plight and the manners in which he deals with everything is fascinating and moved me. Thirst will blow a lot of people away and hopefully those who will end up loving it will get the chance to see it.

After Election 1 & 2 left a big impression on me I thought this would be a good movie, but it really took me by surprise. Many scenes drew me in with unusual style, mood, atmosphere and pacing and I felt totally engrossed. I could call parts of this movie wonderful, fantastic, brilliant, harrowing or anything that sounds epic and creates a big impact. As a whole it's really good if not great. One battle scene I found to be mostly uninteresting or else just over the top, but it was still pretty.
Johnnie To is really an exceptional filmmaker. As evidence from this movie alone, he really likes to play with what he has and create many unique and fun pieces throughout the movie. The characters are really interesting and the plot feels special. Style, color, and lighting are primary play toys for To.
Something that stood out to me was that this movie went beyond the fondly embraced Hong Kong styles of filmmaking and often felt like an international movie.
Highly Recommended.

I'm always happy to come across an album like this. The entire album is strong, and it glides across a range of polished indie sound, from easy-listening to thumping pop ballad.
Sure, some songs stand out as my favorites, but with an album as solid and enjoyable as this I will surely gravitate to different tracks from time to time.

My best friend, Jerrud, whom I watched this movie with, made all of the best points about Zombieland so I will basically paraphrase him here:
Jesse Eisenberg is a great leading character.
It has fun doing it's own thing with a tired genre, and, even during the downtime from the action there is something good to be had.

It's a lot of fun, nicely short, and doesn't feel like it's missing anything. There is very little character development, but what they give us is very tasteful and executed very well. Light on the emotional stuff and heavy on the zombie killing/surviving.
I might only have one complaint and it's that the "rule #... cg layouts" are used just a few times too many. That being said, there is pretty much nothing really to complain about.

A real treat.

Inglorious Basterds

The first scene was pretty much awesome and a real surprise. It immersed me in the farmer's feeling of the situation, feelings that were complex and rich. Careful cinematography, deliberate dialogue and pacing, and great acting made the scene powerful and exciting.

The quality of cinematography, acting, dialogue, and pacing, stays just as strong throughout the rest of the movie. In fact, these qualities(as best I can tell) are an improvement over Tarantino's previous films.
The violence and brutality is direct and sometimes right in your face. What is gruesome and disturbing is commendable because it's realistic, and not lightened by spirits of humor.
There is quite a bit of Tarantino's trademark infusion of cult cinema styling. Sometimes they're fun and interesting additions and at other times too much. It causes some scenes to feel like a joke.

There's a lot of interesting and powerful things going on in the movie. However, it doesn't stick with a character long enough to have a huge impact and in the end, isn't about anything very deep, thereby feeling small rather than big.

Akira Kosemura - Polaroid Piano

Half an hour of gentle piano suites.

Throughout these songs you hear what sounds like the inner-workings of a ship or an old mechanized wood building, it's really nice. Sometimes the sounds of birds or children run across the tracks.

The suites themselves are breathy and airy, a feeling that's carried across the entire album. It's upbeat and pretty, sounding to me like celebrations of life, fond memories and nostalgia.

I really want to share this song by Mount Kimbie because I think it's so rad and catchy. I want to say it's dub but I don't feel familiar enough with the term to know if I'm using it correctly. Anyway, a slow echoing beat makes up a contemplative minute-plus opening, then becomes a thundery backdrop for the clear plinky beats and cut up vocals of the main song.

Wow!

Few films come along like this that so dramatically change my view of what a film can be.
Wen Jiang is the director, star, one of the writers and did the screenplay.
What stands out the most is the visceral style of most of the scenes. With superb directing, editing, acting and camerawork, Jiang creates scenes that can truly be called riveting(a word I don't use lightly). Even with most of the movie moving at that pace(it's appropriate to the story) there are moments of great poetry and lots of valuable human emotions are played out. It's truly phenomenal how this feat could be accomplished. There is so much to celebrate with this movie...
I have nothing else to say. I don't want to spoil anything.

Yobi, The Five Tailed Fox

A mix of humor, fun animation, wonderful imagination, touching moments, good character development and constantly surprising scenarios, Yobi never lets down for a moment.
It also has a beautiful ending.

It reminded me a lot of watching a Hayao Miyazaki movie, but it was distinctly it's own creation. Probably worth mentioning is that the animation wasn't nearly as fluid as you get with a Miyazaki film. Still it didn't bother me because it just all works together so well.

It's a love story at heart. Still, the main character Yobi is more complex than that. All of the character are unique and enjoyable in their own ways.

Dead Man's Bones - Dead Man's Bones

One half of the band is Ryan Gosling. Featuring the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children's Choir. A concept album with themes of zombies, ghosts, werewolfs and death relating mostly to love. Strong influences in the sound seem to be 60's psychedelic music, do-op, and very old pop and rock. The children's choir is often the only voice on a song, it has an interesting affect.
My favorite song is Pa Pa Power and others are My Body's A Zombie For You and Werewolf Heart. The female narrative reminds me of M83's album Saturdays=Youth and the Children's Choir reminds me of Passion Pit's album Manners, both really great indie albums of recent times, yet Dead Man's Bones stands on it's own as a really solid album.

Highly recommendable for anyone who enjoys great sci-fi action and a story of heroes struggling for life in a dark humanity.
I watched this movie with my best friend and I think watching it with friends or family is probably the best way to see it. What's very special for being a sci-fi movie is that it doesn't get involved in explaining any of the technology, even though the technology is totally awesome.
My friend pointed out how great the direction is for a debut feature-film and I agree. Another thing that stood out was the relentless pacing, from beginning to end.
I want to leave as much as I can for surprise.

A lot of fun that gains more steam as it goes along up until the final shots that close the movie with a killer ending.
It's a perfect genre picture. The plot isn't totally unique but it's not about being complex. Action scenes are wild, violent, and cartoonish. They reminded me that this is the guy who did the Evil Dead movies. I've come to realize that this is the movie I've been secretly waiting for Raimi to make.
Fine acting, sets, special affects, and everything else. I'm certain this will become a classic for many people.

After the extremely well made Kekexili by Chuan Lu I knew that this would be very good movie. It is about the Japanese take over of the chinese capitol Nanjing in 1937. The event is known as the nanking massacre and the rape of nanking. It is a very emotional subject for many people.
The action scenes and hand-held style camera make some of the movie not unlike watching Saving Private Ryan. There is also a good amount of static and steady shots. A very nice blend I would say. Whether or not the depiction of history is accurate, I don't care - what it shows is wartime and the affect it has on people. There is a focus on the viewpoints of a japanese sergeant, a chinese soldier and child soldier, john rabe's personal assistant and a chinese woman helping the refugees.
Visceral action scenes, great cinematography, strong emotional scenes and a great ending make this a memorable movie.

Eluvium - Lambent Material

This is a classic album for me. I have always loved it and always will. Eluvium makes music that is on a very special side of the ambiance genre along with namely Tim Hecker, Fennesz and Belong.
So many of his songs begin with a swirling enchanting melody that continues to grow and only become more beautiful until it finally fades away. He wraps his songs in grain and fuzz and field recordings. He also has a pension for playing piano. I kind of feel crappy trying to describe his music at all because it is so special and renders me somewhat speechless after a listen.
If you wish to hear something "beautiful" then check him out.

What an exceptional movie. I feel so happy to have watched it. I feel so happy to have this life, my own life, and my own destiny. This is what the main character Kim Seon-myung felt. Tortured and oppressed during his 45 year imprisonment for being a "communist" he said that his freedom was his consciousness.
The movie itself was very well made. I have no complaints or things to be picky about. It made me feel the joys of camaraderie and the importance of every person's happiness. It made me feel the pain of haunting thoughts that sometimes live in my mind. The battles and dreams of life.
A movie like this could come out of any country in the world because the yearning for freedom is everywhere. The movie begins with this quote, "I don't agree with your ideals. But if someone deters you because of your ideals I will stand by you regardless." - Voltaire

Sonicbrat - Of Things Unending

Sonicbrat is Darren Ng from Singapore.
The first four tracks on this album are light, happy melodies that to me perfectly fit the mood of fall. Then the album shifts into somber reflective moodscapes. Piano becomes prominent in some of the later tracks. Quiet and beautiful.
Clicks, clinks, garbbles, field recordings and all sorts of pretty sounds wonderfully compliment every song.
This album is obviously the work of an expert sound artist who apparently is incorporating his song skills into image and performance projects with other artists on the side.
I will be looking for more Sonicbrat recordings, and continue listening to this album through the dreary seasons.

Since I heard their 3 song ep from cloudberry I have been in love with the song Post which has found real strong resonance in my love life as well as having a kind of comforting sound that reminds me of the alt. rock I listened to in the late 90s. I was overjoyed when I downloaded this album and discovered 11 tracks with a similar feeling.
It's lo-fi indie pop rock from Sweden about lost connections and wanting something more.

Eskimo Snow was recorded at the same time as Alopecia. What stands out as different on this new album is the fullness of sound all throughout it's 35 minute run-time. It's thoroughly enjoyable, elegantly crafted and is chuck full of catchy hooks and rhythms as well as Yoni's signature verbiage and vocal stylings.
If you've never heard Why? before, they are in my opinion the best indie band out there. Yoni Wolf writes songs about his gentle feelings, sad sob story life and oddest thoughts with a sometimes bad-ass hip-hop attitude that sounds like you are listening to someone's weird diary. The band has a knack for making creative enjoyable sounds.
You can't talk about Why? without quoting some of your favorite lyrics;
"Out of every woman on earth who will I mate with, or will I spit empty threats until all that's left is a million zeros printed on a roll of ticker tape, and one last echo of the final tiny wave in my wake. Will all my unused seed collect like mercury in some kind of after-life or halves?"
Simultaneously meaningful and hilarious and always fun to listen to.

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

Why watch a Miyazaki movie?
To find yourself in a unique fantastic world full of great characters, big, small and weird. To get pulled into a rare epic adventure. To remember the values of the heart. To see beautiful, impressive animation.
I don't want to give anything away. I loved this as much as any Miyazaki movie I have seen. As my brother told me, it's his long-since return to being fully hand-drawn(meaning no cgi).
I watched the japanese language version. The voices were so wonderful that I suggest avoiding the Disney released dvd unless it happens to have the japanese voice track on it.

Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport Rating: 8
Electronic, Drum 'n Bass
Fuck Buttons is hard thumping dance music. Typically each song grabs hold and only gets more and more exciting as a new layer of sound gets added on top.
Unlike their previous album, Street Horrrsing, none of the tracks end in awesome screaming vocals. Thankfully, sudden layers of bright electric guitar melody and driving beats remain.
The album plays like a confluence of events, I suppose like a tarot reading describes events in a person's life. Tarot Sport might be the really hyper electronic version of a tarot reading.
My opinion of the album hasn't completely formed yet, but Surf Solar is easily my favorite song. Others tracks like Olympians and Flight Of The Feathered Serpent stand out as well, but mostly the album works as a whole. Something to put on in the background... while you jump around throwing your body recklessly into everyone and everything.

Tarot Sport isn't yet released. On their myspace page you can only listen to a shortened version(by 6 minutes) of Surf Solar, but if you really need some melodious auditory shock treatment then you can listen to all of Street Horrrsing on lala right now.

I am so happy to see a movie like this. It's clever, moving, exciting, surprising and funny. It also has a really interesting commentary about life that's there if you want something to think about afterward yet subtle enough you can just let it sink in.
It's a movie influenced greatly by literature and other movies, but even more so by the trials and curiosities of life itself, and by love. Just when I felt like it was being corny, it proved itself to be cute and charming. When I felt like I knew what was going to happen next, it completely surprised me. Beyond great style and storytelling, moments of genuine beauty and emotion lent a pathos that made this movie something really special.

All of the performances are wonderful!
I would recommend The Brothers Bloom to just about anyone,
so go out and rent it.

Kid CuDi - Man on the moon: The end of day

It's hard for me to give a hip-hop album a 10 because hip-hop has never moved me in the way that music like Belong and Tim Hecker does. Either way, I'm not going to stop listening to this album anytime soon.
What makes it so great is that Kid CuDi sings about what he knows so well, himself. And he does it with great sincerity and play. On top of that, both the artistic vision and electronic production aim at an album that ranges in style and emotion on every single track. The resulting ride hits the moon in flying colors.

My best friend, Jerrud and I are back at shooting video. My camera is on hiatus so we just started using my Mom's camera. I put together some footage we shot yesterday for the fun of it. It has a really beautiful quality that's different from what what my camera captures.

Jónsi & Alex - Riceboy Sleeps

I am familiar with Jónsi from Sigur Ros. His flavor of ambiance is apparent on this album and he even sings in his familiar way on one of the best tracks, Indian Summer.
I am not familiar with Alex Somers however, from the outfit Parachutes. Anyway, on to the album...

It is lush, moving like waves of pretty harmony accompanied by quiet field recordings that fade in and out from the background. Sometimes a soft chorus of voices joins in which is welcome.
There is a lot to enjoy in this album.
Apparently they have been together for about a year now doing shows that are video+audio art.

Engineers - Engineers Rating: 7
Alt Rock

When I put this album on I was really surprised. It's really good. The whole thing is really good... then I listened to it again and began to pick out what was good and what was not so good.
It's a pretty solid album altogether and the lyrics are especially impressive. Radiant vocals permeate the expertly crafted alt. rock sound-scapes and should leave you with a good feeling.
There are a few songs that I think are great:

Lovely Indie Pop, featuring beautiful female vocals, piano and percussion.
I just discovered them and will surely keep going back for more.
I highly recommend the song Creepy Addicts.

Beat Pop, Lounge

A really good album to put on while doing other things.
There are a few exceptional songs. They are the first three and the second to last track called Of Dreams.

I fell in love with one song in particular, A Mile From Here.
The lyrics are
A mile from here I made a hole,
And that’s where I buried your love.

I left it there under the earth,
And I swear I'll never return.
